Beaches
Anstruther Beaches
Anstruther has 3 beaches. You can't miss the first one as it's directly in front of the house. Here, you can sit on the sea wall, sipping a cool glass of wine or hot cup of coffee while you watch the kids play. Good for rolled glass and interesting bits of sea-worn pottery.
Further along the shoreline, past the famous Anstruther Fish Bar, is a small sandy beach, good for sandcastles and for eating your fish and chips.
In the other direction, Billow Ness is another small beach, next to the golf course, perfect for children as it's got sand and rock pools. Just beyond here, towards Pittenweem, older children and fathers will enjoy climbing on the really large rocks.
Elie & Earlsferry Beaches
This sandy beach has the an EU Blue Flag, is a mile long and is wonderfully safe for kids. They can run for miles. There are local shops, cafes and the famous Ship Inn close by. Dogs are not allowed on the beach during the summer months. For a bit of fun, you can watch the Ship Inn cricket team (every other Sunday in the summer) play on the beach. This is where you will find Elie Watersports (see separate entry).
Kingsbarns Beach
At about two miles long, this beach is great for walking. There are sand dunes and the famous Kingsbarns golf course in the background. Nothing in the way of shops and terrible loos so take a picnic.
West Sands, St Andrews
This is the beach famously filmed in the opening sequences of Chariots of Fire. Beaches don't come much longer or whiter than this. Play on the beach and then go and play a round on the Himalayas, a putting green that costs £1 a round and is an hilarous up and down grown-up crazy golf course that kids and adults will both love.
Tentsmuir Nature Reserve and Forest
Fantastic white beach that goes on for miles and, at Tentsmuir Point, you can see and hear hundreds of seals basking on the sandbars. Lots of walks and cycle routes through the towering pine trees behind the beach where you might see red squirrels and roe deer. The car park costs £1 and it's a great place to take a picnic as there are tables and BBQs (no other facilities though).
